The 1851 census shows that Thomas Cook was born in about 1796 in Bath, Somerset. Thomas's wife, Sarah, was a gun polisher, and their son James went on to be a gun maker. Although there is no documentary proof, Thomas's father was probably John Cook, a gun maker in Bath, Somerset:
Pigot's trade directory for Bath in 1844 includes an entry for John Cook, a gun maker.
The November 2006 catalogue from Thomas Delmar, gun dealer, includes an entry describing John Cook as a gun-maker in Bath:
