John was born in about 1767 in Scotland, as shown in the 1841 census. At the time he was living with his family in Clapham, Surrey.

In 1848 John appears on his son's marriage certificate. John's occupation is described as "Army". The 1851 census shows John as an 84-year-old widower living with his son and daughter at Acre Lane in St George in the East.

John had (at least) the following children:

• Elizabeth McVicar born 1801 in Dorchester, Dorset.. Elizabeth remained unmarried. The 1851 census shows that Elizabeth was born in Ireland, but the 1861 census (image) and 1871 census (image) shows that Elizabeth was born in Dorchester. Elizabeth remained unmarried. Elizabeth died 4q1876 (Camberwell, 1d, 457) aged 76

• Alexander McVicar born 1809 in Canterbury, Kent

In a taped conversation with Dennis Carney in 196x, Teresa remembers Alexander's family and stated that McVicar was from Inverness.
