In 1848 Alexander married Mary Kemp at Hanover Square. His occupation was bookseller (master). Alexander and Mary had the following children:

• Alexander McVicar born 11:25pm on 18th January 1849 and christened on 2nd March 1849 at Holy Trinity, Clapham (IGI), a twin with John. In 3q1872 (Camberwell, 1d, 1065) Alexander married Mary Ann McAvoy (born about 1851 in Peckham). On 4th May 1874 Alexander was a witness at the trial of his younger brother Edward at the Old Bailey (Case 353). The 1881 census and 1891 census shows Alexander and Mary had the following children:
  • Annie Mary A. McVicar, born 3q1873 (Camberwell, 1d, 715) in Peckham. In 1q1895 (Greenwich, 1d, 1044a) Mary married the lodger (as shown in the 1891 census) (Francis) Richard Jaschke. The 1901 census shows Annie living with Richard and her sister Florence in Lewisham. The 1911 census shows Annie and Richard living in Wimbledon. They had no children. Annie died 3q1961 (Surrey Mid Eastern, 5g, 213).

  • Katherine McVicar, born about 1876 in Peckham

  • Florence "Birdie" Mary E. McVicar, born 4q1877 (Greenwich, 1d, 990) in Greenwich. In 3q1902 (Lewisham, 1d, 2245) Birdie married Frederick William Edwards or William John Stubbs.

  • Mabel Mary McVicar, born 3q1880 (Greenwich, 1d, 942) in Deptford, died 2q1881 (Greeenwich, 1d, 530).

  Alexander probably died in 3q1881 aged 32 years (district: Greenwich, vol: 1d, page 561)

• John William McVicar also born 18th January 1849 and christened on 2nd March 1849 at Holy Trinity, Clapham (IGI), a twin with Alexander. John appears in the 1861 census (image) but is not found later.

• Edward James Barker McVicar born 1850 in Brixton

• Frederick McVicar, born 14th August 1852 in Brixton . Frederick died 2Q1853 (Lambeth, 1d, 2*4), aged about 18 months.

• Archibald Francis McVicar, born 2Q1854 (Lambeth, 1d, 366). Archibald died 2q1878 (St. Saviour, 1d, 61) aged 24

• Arthur Bryson McVicar born 2q1856. The 1881 census shows Arthur living with his younger brother Donald in Newington. Arthur is described as clerk. The 1901 census shows Arthur as single and boarding in Newington. Arthur died 2q1907 aged 51 (Southwark, 1d, 51)

• Donald Henry Septimus McVicar, born 27th September 1858 in Brixton. The 1881 census shows Donald living with his older brother Arthur in Newington. Donald is described as exciseman clerk. Donald died 4q1883 (St Saviour, 1d, 61) aged 25

• James McVicar born 4q1859. James is not found from the 1861 census onwards.

• Elizabeth Mary Jane McVicar, born 3rd November 1860 in Brixton. The 1901 census shows Elizabeth (by then known as Mary) and her younger sister Florence living with their aunt Jane Kemp in Marylebone, London.

• Florence Emily McVicar born 1q1863. In 3q1902 Florence married Frederick Edwards or William Stubbs (Lewisham, 1d, 2245).

In a taped conversation with Dennis Carney in 196x, Teresa remembers Alexander's family: "Edward McVicar had brothers and sisters. Brothers died, sisters lived."

The 1851 census shows Alexander and Mary living in Acre Lane in Brixton, where they lived since about 1850 onwards.

The 1861 census (image) shows Alexander and Mary living in 4 George Place, Rose Lane in Brixton.

Alexander probably died 1q1863 (Lambeth, 1d, 292) aged about 54.

The 1871 census (image) shows Mary as the head of the household living in Amersham Grove, Deptford, with her family.

Mary died 24th May 1871.
