In 1880 John married Rose Smith at St John the Baptist Church, Islington, the same church where Rose was christened in 1855. At the time of the marriage, John and Rose lived at 137 Balls Pond Road. John's occupation was leather cutter and warehouseman at Carters (same firm as his son Ernest)

John and Rose had 12 children of whom 8 survived childbirth:

John and Rose's children were:

• Charles Henry Carney born 21st August 1881 at 27 DeBeauvoir Road, Kingland. Charles died 26th March 1886 aged 4 years.

• Florence Rose Carney born 20th December 1882 at 77 Haberdasher Street, Hoxton New Town. Florence died 2q1886 (Hackney, 1b, 252) aged 3.

• Albert Maynard J. Carney, born 4th October 1884 (4Q1884, Hackney, 1b, 500), died 1965

• Minnie Ethel Carney, born 2q1886 (Hackney, 1b, 501), died 1956.

• (William) Harry Carney, born 2q1888 (Shoreditch, 1c, 110).

• Arthur Edward Carney, born 9th December 1889 at 14, Lee Street, Haggerston. Arthur died 23rd June 1890 aged 6 months. Arthur died of bronchopnemonia following measles.

• Annie Winifred Carney, born 2Q1891 (Shoreditch, 1c, 141), died 1918.

• George Herbert Carney, born 3q1892 (Shoreditch, 1c, 128), died 1973. Twin with Jessie.

• Jessie Carney, born 3q1892 (Shoreditch, 1c, 128). Twin with George.

  In the 1901 census Jessie was an 8-year old living with Emma Walker, a widow living at 301 Fulham Road, Kensington. Mrs Walker was a close family friend. In the 1881 census Mrs Walker was living at 137 Balls Pond Rd, the same address as John and Rose when they married a year earlier.

• Alice Maud Carney, born 4q1894 (Shoreditch, 1c, 135). Died 25th February 1896 aged 15 months.

• Sidney Thomas Carney, born 3q1897 (Shoreditch, 1c, 94). On 1q1924, Sidney married Veronica "Ronnie" Victoria Stanion (Stanyon), born 1q1897 (Mile End, 1c, 560) . Sidney died 13th September 1967. Sid and Ronnie had no children.

John Carney.

John Carney died in 1906. He came home one Friday evening not feeling well. By Sunday he had died from influenza and pneumonia. John is buried in Manor Park cemetary, grave no. 611, square 41

Addresses:

• In 1880 when John and Rose married their address was 137 Balls Pond Road, Hackney
• In 1881, at the time of the 1881 census John and Rose living at 27 Debeauvoir Road, Hackney, sharing the house with 2 other families. They were at the address in August 1881 for the birth of Charles
• By December 1882 the family had moved to 77 Haberdasher Street, Hoxton New Town for the birth of Florence
• By 1889 the family had moved to 14, Lee Street, Haggerston, and were there for the 1891 census and 1901 census.
• John died in 1906, and by the time of the 1911 census the family had moved to 34 Albion Road, Dalston

After John died, Rose had a life of poverty and had to go out to work despite having 8 children to look after. Daisy (George Carney's wife) remembers s daughter Minne bringing Ernest around to her house to warm up.
